• Vehicle Type:

Mixed-fleet

NPL Canada, a leader in utility infrastructure services, partnered with Powerfleet to upgrade their GPS fleet tracking solution for better overall visibility and operational efficiency. With a diverse fleet of on-road vehicles, off-road construction equipment, and everything in between, NPL Canada needed a robust fleet telematics solution and dedicated support partner, to help them streamline asset visibility, utilization, and inventory. Since deployment, NPL Canada has gained complete tracking coverage across its expanding fleet – transforming how the team manages field operations, site safety, and resource planning.

About the company

NPL Canada is a key player in natural gas infrastructure services and part of Centuri Group, Inc. Operating across 13 regional hubs in Ontario, NPL Canada supports critical infrastructure with a diverse fleet of pickup trucks, heavy construction machinery, trailers, and specialized drilling equipment.

The Challenge

As NPL Canada scaled operations, its legacy GPS fleet tracking system couldn’t keep up. Until then, all vehicles and equipment were tracked manually, relying on frequent calls and labor-intensive paperwork from the field. When Fleet Director, Paul Lagerwerf joined NPL Canada in 2016, his first project was to find the right fleet management solution for their complex operations – something that was flexible, scalable, and easy-to-implement.

Their business needed robust real-time visibility to streamline operations, reduce downtime, and ensure every piece of equipment was being used
efficiently and safely.

The Solution

After comparing multiple vendors, NPL Canada selected Powerfleet for its reliable GPS fleet tracking, regional presence, and unwavering commitment to customer service. Powerfleet’s platform gave NPL Canada the tools to:

  • Reliably track both powered and unpowered assets
  • Measure equipment utilization to inform resource planning
  • Streamline annual inventory checks with real-time reporting
  • Identify safety risks through driver behavior analytics

A phased rollout ensured each of NPL Canada’s operational hubs came online with minimal disruption, supported by hands-on guidance from Powerfleet’s implementation team.

Implementation & Partnership

Implementation was carried out region by region, allowing NPL Canada to maintain uptime while bringing over 1,000 assets online within 6 months. With Powerfleet’s support, the team standardized asset naming and grouping, and received ongoing training and reporting setup assistance. Paul and his team weren’t just looking for a vendor – they were looking for a partner.
